Independent advice for
traveling the world

Travel Dos and Don'ts
CHOOSING ...
Do
* Visit http://citynet.destinations.com to check out information on countries worldwide.
* Send postcards to tourist offices with specific interests that you would like information.

Don't
* Plan to have a lot of flexibility in each city. The golden rule of travel is that "you can't see it all."
* Throw darts at your map.

PURCHASING ...
Do
* Use a travel agent for transportation services.
* Buy the best guidebooks and maps available

Don't
* Believe everything you read off the Internet or in newspapers.

CHEAP SLEEPS ...
Do * Decide before arriving what type of accommodations to look for. * Take a break from hostels and camping to treat yourself once in a while. Pensions are almost like hotels except you share a bathroom while paying a price comparable to a hostel. * Check out www.hostels.com or www.hiayh.org for lists and reservations for hostels in larger cities.

Don't
* Don't always take offers from those approaching you at the train station. You may walk over two miles just to see the place. Ask for directions, compare to other offers and then decide. Eastern Europe is the exception since many cheap accommodations are near the station.

MONEY MATTERS ...
Do
* Exchange US$ into the foreign currency upon arrival to your first destination.($50 equivalent)
* Do take travelers checks (but use near the end of the trip)
* Take an American Express card or other credit card if possible www.americanexpress.com

Don't
* Rely on credit card or ATM. Most ATM machines in Europe cannot read our magnetic strips.
* Use credit card for all purchases unless you plan to use the following year to pay it off. Designate credit card for one area (accommodations, food, etc.)

ON THE TRAIN ...
Do * Arrange for a couchette to sleep at night (see article on transportation) * Keep a passport handy for border-patrol crossing.

AT NIGHT ...
Do
* Enjoy the European night life. There are not many other cultures that compare. * Try to get with a group (hostel signups, etc.) to bar hop. It is easier to meet new people.
* Learn cheesy pick-up lines in the local language (next issue).

Don't
* Order a Bud.

SEX/DRUGS ...
Do
* What you think

Don't
* Blame us!
