Volunteer Abroad

The Lowdown

Article by Roger Norum

Nearly every country from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe has some national or local organization that runs programs for volunteers. It is best to go through an organization in your home country that will administer and oversee your program (see our directory on page 42 for some of these): this facilitates logistics coordination and ensures that your experience will run smoothly – culture shock aside.

Volunteers for Peace (www.vfp.org) is a non-profit organization that has been linking volunteers with international workcamp programs for over 20 years. They place volunteers in over 2400 summer, short-term programs in more than 90 countries and charge roughly $200-$400 for most programs, which includes room and board.
