Red Eye
By Jeff Booth

Once again, travelers are packing their rucksacks not only with much-loved Tevas and highlighted guidebooks but also with the fear of terrorism in a foreign country.

The recent bombings in London, one of my favorite destinations, can’t help but make some travelers think twice about cheap flights to Stansted and cheaper fish and chips in Covent Gardens. At the same time, whether it’s to the U.K. or Red Sea resorts or some place untouched by violence, I still believe that travel is exactly what is needed. Josanna O’Neil, a friend of the Student Traveler crew, took her first trip abroad last year—to London. After the bombings, she confided to me that having drunk a few pints with some Brits and ridden those buses and metros, the tragedy struck her in a deeper, more personal way. Her empathy for Londoners was real, and based on friendship and experience. I’d argue that a few pub nights would go a long way in improving international diplomacy these days. Whether you study abroad for a semester or four years, spend some time and sweat volunteering for those less fortunate, or just wander alone—but meeting people in every city, you’ll be a diplomat of sorts, part of the United Nations of Nomads. And, I think, we really will be making the world a bit better, one backpack at a time.

Travel wisely, and widely,
Jeff
