Red Eye

Travel, like so many things, has changed in the last two months. For some people, the idea of hopping on a plane and taking off for some far-flung country doesn't quite have the same appeal as it once did. Yet, one could argue that now is as good, or as important, a time to travel as ever.

The technical details are promising: security is tightened at airports, the airline industry is reinstating flights to more destinations, and bargain prices are cropping up if you keep an eye out. But it's really the essence of travel that makes the case for us to get back on the road. Traveling is an education, for yourself, and those you meet, from South Dakota to Thailand. It's about new perspectives on cultures that seem far away sometimes, and putting some distance between the familiar and the new give us better insight into our own home.

That distance is whatever you're comfortable with. Maybe it's taking a road trip with friends and rediscovering America (and there's a lot to find, on and off the highway), or volunteering in India or someplace closer to home. Whenever you're ready, new lands and open roads await.

Go forward, never straight,
Jeff
